80s Slasher Movie Championship Tournament: Finals

Special thanks again to Reverend Phantom for the awesome banner.

Well 222 movies have been eliminated, and now it's finally come down to the final two. The Semi-Finals saw Canada's MY BLOODY VALENTINE going up against FRIDAY THE 13TH, and A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET taking on the third installment of the ELM STREET series, DREAM WARRIORS. MY BLOODY VALENTINE put up a decent fight but ultimately came up five votes short of advancing. DREAM WARRIORS, on the other hand, was slaughtered by the first NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, which surprised me a little. I thought it would be a close match-up, but apparently most of the people who voted, including myself, thought that the technically better movie deserved to advance over the fan-favorite. Now that finally leaves us with the two original films from the most popular franchises in not only the slasher sub-genre, but horror in general.

FRIDAY THE 13TH (1980) vs. A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET (1984)

Need I say more? The polls are now open until Friday, June 25th. Please feel free to come back and vote as many times as you'd like. Stay tuned for more poorly-written slasher movie reviews here on the Death Rattle and also for the inevitable crowning of the undisputed King of 80s Slasher Movies which will wrap up the month. Thanks!

  1. Ugh tough one here, they both had such profound impacts on the genre, but Nightmare is much more original and inventive, so I have to give it to Wes

  2. I can understand why this may to be tough for most people...but it's easy for me. Friday the 13th all the way...and I have a feeling I'm in the minority.

  3. Yeah this is a tough one. I want to vote for FRIDAY since it's easily my favorite franchise of the two, but if I were to vote based on movie vs. movie, it's NIGHTMARE hands down. I haven't voted yet because I can't make up my mind. I might just leave this one to you guys.

  4. "A Nightmare on Elm Street" all the way. "Friday the 13th" was a good slasher, but in no way did it have the same impact and brilliance that Wes Craven's masterpiece showed.

  5. Yeah I feel the same way as you Aaron. Nightmare is definitely a better film, but I just enjoy watching Friday so much more.

  6. Atroxion: Thanks for the feedback!

Becky: I hear ya... even though I should vote for ANOES because it's technically the better movie, my loyalty will always be with the F13TH series. But honestly though, I'm not a huge fan of the first FRIDAY THE 13TH, even with the nostalgia factor. Parts 2 and 3 on the other hand...
